Like many of the other Irish country pubs listed on bloodbusiness.info there isn’t very much online about Jim’s Bar (its moribund Facebook page suggests people “come for the pints, stay for the craic” which could apply to literally any of the thousands of pubs across Ireland). Like many of the other Irish pubs we’ve listed, though, at least some of the people who come ‘for the pints’ are fox hunters (this is a country where fox hunting is still shamefully legal). According to a January 2025 report in the pro-hunt Irish Field, at a meet of the North Kerry Harriers, hunters congregated at Jim’s Bar where they were “inundated with offers of drinks and all kinds of refreshments” and that at the end of the hunt “Jim’s Bar (O’Connor’s) was ready with all kinds of hospitality for tired and hungry hunters.”  Tired from terrorising foxes with a pack of 21 dogs, presumably, including “a fine dog fox” who provided the hunters with “a nice dash”.

‘Guests’ at Jim’s that day included:

  • Local GP Dr Joe Arthur, who practices in nearby Abbeyfeale and his daughter Suze O’Neill, a specialist physiotherapist and “joint field master for the day”.
  • Harriers Hunt secretary Shannon O’Mahony who works as a psychiatric nurse and who, with Jeremiah O’Connor, runs Derra Farm Equestrian.
  • Hunt chairman and master Michael O’Sullivan – “a lecturer in mechanical engineering”
  • Kevin Quilter who owns and operates Quilter Insulation.
  • Auctioneer Tom Dillion who “is normally seen spotting some sale properties while out on horseback.”
