Part of the vast landholdings of the Duke of Westminster, the Eaton Estate website claims it is “Delivering positive change that contributes to the economic, social, and environmental wellbeing of the communities we are part of.” That’s not strictly accurate when it comes to the communities of wildlife living on the estate, as in November 2024 the Green Britain Foundation obtained undercover footage of a fox trapped in a snare on the Eaton Estate. The Mirror reported that the activists who had discovered and filmed the snared fox, had found many other snares set in one wood on the 11,000 acre property. Eaton Estate is one of many that are part of the Duke of Westminster’s wider Grosvenor Estate. His other land holdings include Abbeystead Estate in Lancashire. Like Eaton, this estate has land management practices which include snaring and trapping to facilitate the shooting of pheasants and partridges.
