What does Somerset and the Exmoor National Park need? Better hiking trails, perhaps, or better protection for the wildlife that lives in the ‘national park’? No, what the owners of the Culbone Stables Inn feel is needed is yet another shooting lodge…Yes, as of this listing (September 2024) “The Culbone Stables is currently closed to the public and will reopen as a private shooting lodge for the 2024 season.” The ‘season’ (what an awful term to describe the killing of huge numbers of birds) has already begun for the shooting of ducks and Common Snipe (of which there will be some in the locality), and both species of Partridge. Pheasant killing, though, begins from 01 October so perhaps the owners are planning to join the long list of establishments that profit from customers travelling to Exmoor to kill tens/hundreds of the 50 million non-native pheasants released into the British countryside for their ‘enjoyment’…
