According to a Dec 2023 puff-piece on ‘The Best UK Hotels for Sporting Pursuits’ in the Evening Standard, the Beckford Arms (on the edge of the Fonthill Estate) is ‘a proper Georgian pub’. ‘Country sport’ apparently “runs through this Wiltshire estate’s blood, with fly fishing or deer stalking easily organised by the ghillies. And if ever there was a better opportunity to play country squire, shooting parties are Fonthill’s bread and butter, with groups taking over the pub.” Something to bear in mind if sitting amongst ‘groups’ of shooters discussing guns and killing wildlife is not your idea of a good evening out…
