Purdey has been gun-makers to the bloodsports-loving royal family since the reign of Queen Victoria. The Purdey website is (as might be expected) a paean to using its products to kill wildlife, and contains pieces extolling the ‘Glorious 12th’ and the ‘best’ estates for shooting birds. Its products are staggeringly expensive (the Purdey Sporter comes in at £45k, other models are more than £100k) underlining how far ‘shooting’ is removed from the ‘one man and his dog taking wildlife for the pot’ model still promoted to the public by shooting lobbyists.
