“An elegant country house hotel nestled in the Dee Valley with magnificent views of Snowdonia…Set within 50 acres of immaculate gardens and parkland, our meticulously restored Victorian country estate offers a luxurious retreat into nature…” You know what’s coming next, right? Of course, while selling an image of luxury and nature, the Pale Hall is also firmly entrenched within the shooting industry. A webpage on ‘Shooting’ is emblazoned with a pheasant logo (not a native bird of Wales or Snowdonia), is packed with very expensive sports cars (which is at least a more honest appraisal than usual of who can afford a couple of days’ killing birds in this part of the world), and the usual overblown blather about an ‘unrivaled shooting experience’, ‘challenge’, and ‘sport’. It’s all nonsense: bird shooting is violent and nasty and the people who peddle it really ought to at least admit that, but who would buy it unless it’s packaged as a luxury? Pathetic, really…
