With a history dating back to 1775, the website of the White Hart Hotel says it is the “gateway to the magnificence of Dartmoor”, by which it means the magnificent ‘national park’. You know, those special areas that the rest of us assume are full of protected wildlife but which ‘shooters’ see only as places to kill birds and mammals? A lot of venues (as our site shows) are keen to cash in on this slaughter in the countryside, and the White Hart Hotel is no different. Under ‘What to do’ it suggests shooting birds, leading with “The Perfect Stay for the Perfect Shoot” and reminding everyone that “Dartmoor is famous for its wild adventure and country sports…it offers a landscape envied worldwide…The White Hart Hotel is the ideal base for any party looking to enjoy shooting on the Moor.” The Hotel website even mentions allowing ‘shooting dogs’ to stay at no extra cost (conversely, for everyone else, their homepage says under ‘We are very dog friendly at the White Hart Hotel’: “Dogs and Dartmoor go perfectly together and are very welcome to come and stay with us too – we provide a dog bed, bowl, towel, treat bag and charge £10 per dog, per night”).
