Set in the beautiful Forest of Bowland (a notorious hot spot for Hen Harrier persecution), the Inn says “an area of outstanding natural beauty, Whitewell is a special place to be in Summer.” Perhaps not so much in autumn and winter, though, when the shooting ‘season’ begins again – something the Inn is keen to get involved with. Under ‘Things to Do’ is, almost inevitably, a ‘Shooting’ section. The Inn notes it “is perfectly situated next to some of the finest pheasant and partridge shoots in the country and at the foot of some spectacular grouse moors. We are able to help organise shooting for parties…Merino shooting socks, leather cartridge bags, gun slings and many more shooting accessories available from our shop.” Yeah ‘outstanding natural beauty’ has its attractions, but a business is missing a trick if it doesn’t point out opportunities to go and kill birds in it…
