Visitors to the Earl of Derby’s Knowsley estate near Liverpool, may not realise that a range of different businesses are being offered on the one site: Knowsley Hall (a well-known filming location), Knowsley Safari Park (which keeps animals from lions and tigers to rhinos, meerkats and giraffes), and a huge shoot. The Knowsley Estate is a sporting estate which offers “quality-driven” (no, we’re not sure quite what that refers to) pheasant shooting and partridge shooting “for up to 8-10 guns over 2,000 acres of traditional parkland. Shoots take place in October, November, December and January, with days from 200 to 300 birds” – that’s not the number of birds being seen, of course, that’s the number the guns will expect to kill. What with all those captive animals as well, at Knowsley non-native species really do abound…
