“Sharp course mostly on side of hill; first 4 fences close together on valley floor; 3rd is appreciably higher on landing side; stiff uphill climb after ditch to 5(11/17)” etc etc. More to the ‘point’ is that Umberleigh race course is on the point-to-point circuit. Point to Points are built around keeping hunts in the public eye. According to the British Horseracing Society, Point-to-Point Steeple Chases are for horses owned and ridden by members of an affiliated Hunt. A fixture can either be arranged by a Hunt or group of Hunts. Hunting’s ‘friendly face’ they often feature a dog show and are recruiting vehicles for hunts. They are often heavily sponsored by hunt-supporting businesses. Cothelstone features fundraising point-to-points for the violent Quantock Staghounds, the merged Weston & Banwell Harriers and West Somerset Vale, and the Taunton Vale Hunts. Umberleigh hosts fundraising point-to-points for the notorious Torrington Farmers Hunt, who were there in June 2024 and again in June 2025.
