“A magnificent 16th century castle set within the beautiful Lauderdale Estate in the Scottish Borders. Historic home of the Duke of Lauderdale..the Castle is one of the oldest and finest in Scotland and still remains home to the Maitland family today.” Like other huge estates that cost fortunes to run, Thirlestane has ‘diversified’ offering itself as a wedding venue, providing luxury accommodation and fine dining – and (as this is Scotland where it seems pretty much all the wildlife is for sale) shooting. Under the almost inevitable title of ‘Country Pursuits‘ (in a country that has far more to it than just turning up and killing birds or deer), Thirlestane says it “is a stunning setting…The estate has extensive areas of moorland and woodland and offers grouse, pheasant and partridge shooting, as well as roe deer stalking.” Sadly claims of a stunning setting are undermined but the supporter who alerted us to Thirlestane, who says that “Rearing field is a shambles of run down huts visible from road since storms blew trees down. A68 next to it is like a battlefield from the Somme with roadkill during autumn & winter”. Classy…
