On its Facebook page The Wheatsheaf says it is (and we’re quoting directly) a “Traditional pub in a medieval village , good real ales a good hostpiality”. We think we know what they’re trying to say and perhaps it’s only right that a pub in a ‘medieval village’ would be the regular Boxing Day meeting place for a notorious local hunt. The East Essex Hunt met here for many years. Or at least they did before they shut down soon after North London Hunt Sabs caught its terrierman torturing a fox. Footage captured by the sab group’s trail cameras in December 2021 caught Paul O’Shea using a pitchfork to torment a fox over a prolonged period. Pitchforking wild animals sounds positively ‘medieval’ to us, and hopefully the Wheatsheaf won’t be welcoming other animal abusers to their door in the future.
