“The Red Lion Hotel is an 18th Century 4-star Inn that stands on the quay alongside Clovelly’s ancient harbour in North Devon. Each of its 17 beautifully decorated rooms boast a sea view.” We have previously listed Clovelly Court which is part of the huge Clovelly Estate owned by John Rous (who was appointed President of the Devon County Show, which regularly hosts the South Devon Hunt, and who runs the Woolsery Show, where organisers were pleased to announce in 2024 the ‘support’ of packs of hounds drawn not just from fox hunting, but deer hunting, hare hunting, and mink hunting too), but a supporter who knows the area well suggested we ought to also list the Red Lion Hotel. Clovelly Estate is a huge pheasant shooting business with thousands of birds reared in its woods each year and many hundreds of shooters arriving in the ‘season’ (according to the promotional blurb, “DRIVEN DAYS OF 200 to 400 BIRDS with SINGLE GUNS also available. Superb & exciting shooting in a stunning location” etc etc). The Red Lion is run by the estate and directly profits from the bulk of visiting hunters, many of whom stay there – presumably enjoying those sea views after a day spent blasting holes in birds…
