“The Phoenix Hotel Chard is a unique pub/hotel in the centre of town, providing good quality accommodation, food and entertainment at an affordable price.” None of that (taken from the Hotel’s website) sounds unique in any way – inoffensive but not unique. Inoffensive the copy may be, but the Phoenix Hotel was all over the Cotley Hunt on Boxing Day 2025, serving (we’re informed) free mulled wine to the riders – just what they need before charging off around the local countryside on horseback. And that will offend a lot of people who don’t see animal abuse as ‘tradition’ or ‘what the countryside’ should be all about. There are over 100 places to stay in and around Chard, so there are plenty of alternatives to the hunt-supporting Phoenix…
