Seemingly a cross between a traditional Guinness pub and a Chinese restaurant, the Millrace (on Drumshanbo’s high street) is well-known as the base for the Leitrim Harriers fox hunting club when they hunt in the area. According to the hunt’s out-of-date website, the Leitrim Harriers Hunt Club was formed in 2002 and hunt from October to March each year. It’s worth noting that fox hunting is legal in Ireland as foxes are not a protected species, but hunts must be registered and take place at only certain times of the year: a RED C opinion poll, commissioned by the Irish Council Against Blood Sports in 2019, found that 77% agree that the Irish Government should ban fox hunting. The images on the hunt’s own Facebook feed seem to reflect if not opposition to hunting by the general public at least a complete lack of interest in it…
