Right on the Somerset/Devon border the Anchor Inn is a “Historic pub in Exebridge near Exmoor with a riverside setting and large beer garden. Serving great value family food with beautiful 6 en-suite rooms.” Owned by Greene King, The Anchor Inn has had something of an on-off relationship (mostly very much ‘on’) with the notoriously violent Quantock Staghounds for many, many years. In September 2023 the hunt was watched leaving the pub prompting an email campaign, which resulted in the Anchor banning the hunt. However, the hunt was using the Anchor again in autumn 2024. A photo was taken of them leaving the car park by a staff member of the League Against Cruel Sports, who then wrote to Greene King drawing the following response from the Operations Director for the south west: “I have spoken to the independent operator of The Anchor again today as a matter of urgency. In doing so, I have reinforced the position of Greene King that the independent operator should continue to cease the Quantock Staghounds from using The Anchor Inn as a base for their hunt.” The Quantocks rarely pay any attention to requests (or the law) so pro-wildlife activists will be keeping a wary eye on the situation in this blood-drenched part of England…
