A community-owned pub, the Tafarn Sinc claims a “unique ambience of yesteryear nostalgia conveyed by the agricultural implements, the flannel shirts and flitches of real ham hanging from the ceilings. And not forgetting the castrating pincers and the sawdust strewn floors”, which the Tafarn’s website follows up with “The charm of days gone by remains…It can be breathed in.” While different communities of course have different concepts of what constitutes ‘charm’, the reminders of animal exploitation does seem the perfect ambience for a hunt, and this particular community gave their pub to the Tivyside Hunt for a fundraising Christmas Raffle in 2024. Half the prizes are alcohol in some form. Yes, it’s a pub, and yes, it’s Christmas, but it does also seem very typical of hunt meets, hunt balls, and hunt raffles that alcohol always seems to be part of the draw…
