“Stay amid 20,000 acres of the most breath-taking countryside, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales…There is a sense throughout the Castle of it being more of a lavish country home than a hotel, with individually designed bedrooms, each with generously sized bathrooms and exceptional views.” No matter how it’s dressed, the fact is that the hotel is part of the Swinton Estate which has been owned by the Cunliffe-Lister family since the 1880s. Mark Cunliffe-Lester was Chair of the shooting lobby group Moorland Association between May 2020 and May 2024, reminiscing in a 2020 article in Yorkshire Life that his “favourite memory was doing walked up shooting days either as a beater or a gun, around the moor edge where you never knew what game might suddenly appear”. Swinton sits squarely within the raptor persecution hot spot of Nidderdale and regularly features on the renowned Raptor Persecution UK blog, which describes Swinton as “a notorious grouse-shooting estate that has been at the centre of police investigations into confirmed and alleged raptor persecution for years“.
