Owned by hospitality-magnate Michael Cannon (who owns at least six other estates) and based out of Stackholme Farm (the correspondence address for head gamekeeper John Pinkney), Wemmergill grouse moor “covers a vast 18,000 acres, and crosses the county boundary from Cumbria into County Durham.” Eulogised in a 2016 Shooting UK article which noted how many ‘guns’ had flown from America to kill wild birds, the estate is notorious for the illegal shooting of birds of prey, including Short-eared Owls (a bird found dead in 2021 was discovered just over 1km from where two Short-eared Owls had been found buried in potholes on the Wemmergill Estate in 2015), and a Scottish-born Hen Harrier called Marc who moved onto Wemmergill in 2018 where his satellite tag suddenly stopped working.
