Owned by Mars (the American multinational manufacturer of confectionery, pet food, and other food products including Wrigley’s, M&Ms, Twix, and Pedigree), Spillers “as horse owners ourselves” are “totally committed to research that will make a difference to our horse’s health and happiness today.” Of course, ‘owned’ horses should be well-fed and looked after, but equally of course horses are the backbone of hunts and hunting. A business as vast and global as Mars probably doesn’t worry about the potential reputational damage that comes from being regular sponsors of hunting – including of the notorious Quorn Hunt Ladies Day – but their money will be welcomed by a ‘hobby’ that is increasingly loathed by more and more of the public…
