Owner Clover Shuttlewood says she founded Shuttlesocks “in 2018 after searching high and low for the perfect pair of grouse socks for my gamekeeper husband, I decided to design my own and ShuttleSocks was born!” Enterprising stuff. Who might that gamekeeper husband be though? Jimmy Shuttlewood, Headkeeper on Snilesworth Estate in the North York Moors (described as “only twenty minutes’ drive from the shooting market town of Helmsley”, which conjures up images of the Wild West -which some local residents may well say is far too near the knuckle to be amusing). Mr Shuttlewood featured in an RSPB investigation into baiting cage traps with live pigeons to attract birds of prey. In 2008 “Three of the Snilesworth Estate gamekeepers pleaded guilty to a number of offences. The head gamekeeper, James Shuttlewood (40), an experienced gamekeeper of over 20 years, pleaded guilty to five offences of permitting the use of five of the illegal traps by his staff. He was fined £1,250” – and is still working on the same estate of course, but now with warm socks on…
