A 2023 investigation by Wildlife Guardian and the National Anti Snaring Campaign into the ‘grouse capital of North Wales’ opens by stating that “Ruabon Moor has historically held the record for the greatest number of grouse shot per acre in the UK…The site comprises 7,125 acres of predominantly dry heath with some blanket bog. It has been recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).” Like so many grouse moors Ruabon has seen raptor persecution. Three satellite-tagged Hen Harriers ‘mysteriously vanished’ on Ruabon in a short period for example (Heulwen in 2018; Aalin in 2018; Bronwyn in 2019) and a poisoned raven was discovered there in 2018. The grouse moor and basically the whole of Ruabon mountain, up to the County boundary with Denbighshire, is part of the Wynnstay Estate and owned by Harry Watkins Williams-Wynn – the very same Harry Watkins Williams-Wynn who runs the Sir Watkin Williams Wynn Hunt, better known of course as the notorious Wynnstay…
