“Join us for the Royal Bath & West Show – A Great British day out for all of the family”, says the website for one of the largest ‘country’ shows in the UK. It goes on to say “The Royal Bath & West of England Society organises several significant agricultural and rural shows at the Bath & West Showground near Shepton Mallet.” Undoubtedly hugely popular, these shows attract large audiences. Little wonder then that hunts take the useful opportunity to turn up and promote themselves, typically by inviting children to ‘pat the hounds’ while NOT explaining what the purpose of hunts is or what the hounds are actually trained to do. As well as providing the venue, the Royal Bath and West Society has close connections with the notorious Blackmore and Sparkford Vale Hunt and the Newt in Somerset Hotel which we have also featured: Sue Seager, Estate Manager of The Newt is on the Board of The Royal Bath & West of England Society; a former trustee (he resigned in July 2024), Mike Felton, is a Director of the BSV and joined its mastership in 1992.
