“Set in tranquil parkland and filled with hedges and trees in the valley, with the magnificent Forest of Bere at its edge”, Rookesbury Park Campsite is listed by the Caravan Club and noted as being “an ideal choice for those with children…and leisurely absorbing the peace and quiet of the former royal Forest of Bere.” Sounds perfect – unless you have any objection to the pheasant shooting that takes place here in the winter. One review mentions that “the wardens dealt with everyone very efficiently, explaining about not letting the dogs off their leads in certain areas because of pheasant shooting” and another visitor who contacted us reported a notice in the shower block “apologising for any disturbance visitors might experience if there was shooting taking place on the estate”. The Caravan Club states that “The area is abundant with wildlife and a variety of birdlife”, but we could find nothing giving visitors a heads-up about that birdlife being shot dead…
