According to the Ring O’Bells homepage, “A warm Dartmoor welcome waits…” at what is described as a “quaint countryside, dog friendly Inn exudes all the traditional charm and warm, friendly ambience you could want from a Dartmoor B & B”. Which sounds great, but just who is it the Ring O’Bells is extending that greeting to – us wildlife supporters or the horse/gun crowd? This is Dartmoor National Park, one of the most hunted and shot-over pieces of countryside in England, so no surprise really to find the pub pitching to the ‘sports’ johnnies, saying that “hunting is one of the best ways to get to know the moor” and that blasting farmed and intensively-reared pheasants out of the air is “a popular sport on Dartmoor.” And just for good measure how about promote these ‘country sports’ with a photo of a captive kestrel sat on a falconers glove…tasteless indeed.
