“Welcome to Award-Winning, North Wales Rhug Estate Organic Farm – Producing, Organic Beef, Organic Lamb & Organic Poultry for over 20 years”, proclaims the Rhug website which also points to thier CafΓ© & Online Shop. Rhug came into the Wynn family in the 19th century, and so on to Robert Vaughan Wynn, the present Lord Newborough. Covering 12,000 acres, and despite boasting that the estate has the ‘highest animal welfare standards’, the estate hosts “traditional” sports including shooting. But we all know what ‘traditional’ also includes, and true to form, as reported by North Wales Hunt Saboteurs, Lord Newborough hosted the notorious Wynnstay Hunt on Rhug in February 2024. The hunt was on foot and the report is long and linked below, and includes details of damage to sab vehicles, illegal hunting (“The X-rated movie star come huntsman Henry Bailey then headed to the first cover and was hollering and burring in an attempt to flush a fox”) and even Rhug staff being involved (“…some rather aggressive sheep shearers from the Rhug estate, who didn’t seem to know much about anything…”). Members and supporters of the Wynnstay have numerous convictions to their name. Reviews of the cafe already include comments about the hunt but curiously the Rhug website doesn’t mention it at all…
