“Preshaw House is situated on Preshaw Down in the Upper Meon Valley. It is surrounded by 19th century parkland and on higher ground has views to the coast. It is within the South Downs National Park.” The farm and parkland surrounding the manor house remain in the ownership of the Pelly family. While not open to the general public (who presumably don’t deserve to enjoy this part of the Hampshire countryside), the Pellys – who own the Preshaw Shoot Syndicate – do open the estate to shooters who want to come and kill the non-native pheasants they push out into that same countryside. A description on shooting lobbyist website GunsOnPegs says “Game shooting has been a Preshaw tradition for centuries. Pheasant and partridge are driven from mature woodland and open downland across undulating valleys. Typically, 200-bird days for 8 guns.” The attached image makes it all look like a huge amount of fun…not.
