“With a passion for animals and a commitment to their well-being…At Pedro Pet Foods, we understand that your beloved furry and feathered companions are not just pets, but cherished members of your family.” That’s all as it should be, but we have to ask just how encompassing that ‘passion for animals’ is, as Pedro were sponsors of a fundraising dog show run by the notorious Iveagh Fox Hounds. Anyone sponsoring the Iveagh will know that (shamefully) fox hunting is still legal across both Eire and Northern Ireland (online accounts of local hunts ripping up foxes make for truly disturbing reading). Oddly when a local emailed Pedro to say that “due to your support & sponsorship of the Iveagh Fox Hounds, we…will no longer be purchasing your products”, a representative from Pedro mailed back saying that “We don’t support or sponsor anyone off [sic] this name you must have your wires crossed” – a rather offhand example of poor customer service destroyed entirely by a Facebook post by the Iveagh thanking their sponsors (which include Pedro) and numerous photos (which the Iveagh asked everyone to share) showing ‘proud’ participants clutching rosettes and bags of Pedro-branded dog food. What is going on – besides the obvious fact that Pedro does indeed sponsor the Iveagh Fox Hounds fundraiser but seems reluctant to admit it. It’s a mystery that we will be happy to solve if Pedro would like to get in touch…
