There is a LOT of history around Nettlebed Manor and Estate.  The current members of the Fleming family who own the Manor live locally, run the Estate and take an active part in village life. Nettlebed has a community website and Visit Thames says there are hundreds of walks locally. Yet for some reason the fact that there is a large shoot here which “currently shoots over 1,000 acres of the Estate” gets barely a mention at all. How odd. Nettlebed Shoot is family-run, charges well over a grand for a day’s shooting but is oh-so convenient for all those sleepy cityfolk with shotguns as it offers “a beautiful and very good quality day’s shooting for those based in London or the South-East without having to rise unnecessarily early to travel, or face the extra cost of a hotel stay.” We have said this before, but nothing beats having to make no effort whatsoever to spend a day out killing birds. The estate – like so many – even bungs in a bit of booze, saying that they can “provide ‘Good Ordinary Claret’ at lunch, if you would like to bring your own wine, please do.” How thoughtful…
