Llanerchydol has its origins in the name Llanerch Hudol…….meaning ‘Magical’ or ‘Enchanted’ Glade, with a long history linking it to the Princes of Powys, especially Llywelyn ap Gruffudd who restored Llanerchydol and adjacent land to Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn. The house, in its current form is situated in approximately 12 acres of stunning countryside, within the protected Grade II* listed parkland.” Like other former bastions of extreme wealth, the Hall is now used for a number of diverse businesses, from midweek breaks, retreats, events, and even ghost hunts (“In the depths of the cellar, eerie scratching noises mingle with mournful cries, sending chills down the spine of anyone brave enough to venture near” etc). Laudably the Hall doesn’t appear to host hunting of the sort we are focused on and doesn’t appear to have its own shoot – less laudably though it is hosting a local gun shop, the disingenuously-named Rural Sports (seriously, when did that coupling of words come to mean killing wildlife?) which is located just down the road in Llanfyllin. The emphasis is on a ‘thermal demo’ evening (ie shooting unsuspecting animals in the dark) and there is a raffle “with the main star prize being a brand new gun”. A gun for the price of a raffle ticket…
