“A cherished Lake District Estate lovingly restored and steeped in history”, the Lingholm Estate offers “luxury accommodation to suit groups of all sizes”, “A wide variety of activities”, and “a charming setting for guests to enjoy breakfast, lunch, and afternoon tea.” Almost inevitably – the estate is in a wildlife-rich national park after all – it hosts shooting too. In fact, it has a very long history when it comes to shooting, “The period up to the Second World War was the heyday of the shoot with thousands of pheasants reared each year” says the Estate website. There is very little else to let a potential visitor know that alongside the Lingholm Poppy, the Adventure Playground, and the Squirrel Hide (quite an irony if you know the history of Red Squirrel persecution on shooting estates), shooting is a part of the business, as current-day shooting activities are kept out of sight on a dedicated Instagram feed – Lingholm Sporting (described as a “Pheasant & Partridge shoot in the heart of the Lake District”).
