Run by Bexhill-based Park Holidays UK, Lakeside Holiday Park is in “A setting with fishing lakes…this holiday park probably has more water than land! This means 10 large fishing lakes set in over 150 acres of beautiful Sussex countryside.” So how does a holiday park built right in the perfect place for waterbirds, react when waterbirds become attracted to it? By shooting them in a weekend slaughter fest that apparently saw geese falling “wounded into the water…leading to numerous complaints.” On the 14th January 2025 armed police “were called to the site after terrific arguments blew up when wounded birds splashed into the lake by anglers.” As a spokesperson for West Sussex Wildlife Protection said (astutely and entirely accurately) at the time: “Anecdotal evidence is that the manager wants to reduce geese droppings on the site, which if true, is horrendous given the chalets are sighted on wildfowl habitat.” This is shockingly inappropriate behaviour, and would surely (surely?) be condemned by management at Park Holidays – at least we would hope so…
