Ranked as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted and supporting “projects across a wide range of subject areas that help drive positive change in animal and equine wellbeing, agriculture, sports performance and public health”, Hartpury College has a good reputation. Its equine centre is world class and it has its own dedicated Veterinary Nursing Clinical Skills Centre. However, Hartpury is also renowned for turning out gamekeepers – and turning them out after feeding them nonsense like “Follow in the footsteps of gamekeepers, stalkers and industry professionals who have a hugely positive impact on the countryside. This course will develop your knowledge and understanding of the game industry.” Gamekeeping is of course all about killing wildlife so that other people can come and kill even more wildlife. We’ve yet to find out what ‘positive impact’ gamekeeping has except on the profits of the very ‘game industry’ that has carefully nurtured this propaganda for decades and has normalised the slaughter of literally millions of birds and mammals. And in fact that slaughter can even be ‘enjoyed’ within the grounds of Hartpury on one of its own shoots, as the attached image shows. And let’s not forget the disgraceful 2017 incident when students were busted for “killing animals and posting pictures on Snapchat ‘as part of a game'”. Following in the footsteps of the nation’s gamekeepers indeed…
