“Great Fulford” says current owner Francis Fulford, “is first and foremost the home of my family…to help raise the necessary funds [for upkeep] we now open the house by appointment to tour parties, and offering it as a venue for corporate events, private parties, weddings, and as a location for films and photography.” Something’s missing surely? This is Devon where it seems like almost every landowner is flogging birds to shooters…And lo and behold, as if hidden away so as not to offend the regular tourist, we find an entirely different version of Great Fulford: the Great Fulford Estate Shoot. No mention of shooting on the main estate website, separate Instagram accounts (check out Great Fulford and Great Fulford Estate Shoot which disingenuously uses the same dog in very different settings), one version of this split personality venue saying “Great Fulford has some superb outside locations available for hire… film sets, yoga retreats, natural swimming, campsites for festivals, historical walks – to name a few”, the other “Historic shooting estate, 3000 acres, perfect for quality pheasant and partridge shooting. Situated on the edge of Dartmoor National park… The shoot benefits its [sic] own comfortable shoot lodge and great chef…The normal bag is between 200 and 350 birds.” How is the non-shooting visitor supposed to know? As the saying goes, ‘There, we’ve fixed that for you’…
