Some estates make a pretence of being more about the landscapes and relaxation, while others – and Glenmoriston is a classic example – make it plain from the outset, through videos of shoots and images of shoots and self-satisfied men with smoking shotguns, that people come here to kill wildlife. Plain and simple. Yes, the estate owners may dress things up a little – and Glenmoriston has the usual guff about “relaxing in the spectacular surroundings” and how the estate, set on the shores of Loch Ness, “truly is an idyllic location” – but what it really sells to its clients (some coming from Denmark by the looks of things) is shooting pheasants, partridges, and deer.
