“Set in the spectacular Weald of Kent the estate covers approximately 5,000 acres. Its historic broad leaf woodland, conifer forests and hidden valleys provide ideal terrain for showing challenging birds. Glassenbury offers driven pheasant shooting of the highest quality and spectacular driven mallard.” Every shoot uses the same breathless phrases to describe killing birds but that latter clause is particularly galling: many birders will agree that Mallard are spectacular birds (males in sunlight are incredibly beautiful), but when driven off ponds straight at a line of guns to be shot? The Glassenbury Shoot website refers to accommodation being available at the nearby Star and Eagle Hotel (A charming Hotel & Pub Restaurant dating back to the 14th century, nestling in the heart of the beautiful Kentish Weald”) but while the Star and Eagle hosts all sorts of events and provides a handy list of ‘Things to Do Locally’ it doesn’t mention its promotion on the website of The Glassenbury Shoot. It seems unlikely the two businesses are unaware of each other, but until we know for sure we aren’t listing the hotel separately. If you have further information, please let us know…
