The brainchild of a clearly creative individual, Iona Macgregor’s FeatherDove – a Finalist in the 2023 Scottish Country Sports Tourism Awards (whatever that is) – features art made up of the feathers of birds shot on shooting estates. As the artist herself puts it, “Having been brought up on a grouse moor here in Perthshire, shooting has always been a huge part of my life. FeatherDove was created to try and limit the wastage of feathers, so each picture is hand crafted and backed with real feathers from local shoots that I attend. It’s nice to be able to promote not just a product, but also an industry, and most of all a way of life.” It could be argued that another way of ensuring there is no ‘wastage’ of the parts of shot birds, would be to not shoot them in the first place…and it’s interesting to see that shooting is now referring to itself as the ‘industry’ we labelled it some time ago.
