“Welcome to Egton Estate on the web! Set within 6,000 acres, the Egton Estate run a commercial pheasant shoot, driven grouse shooting over 4,900 acres of heather moorland within the North York Moors National Park SSSI…” Note the proud boast that Egton runs its bird killing operations within the ‘national park’ and on an SSSi – saying under ‘Grouse Shooting‘ that “Egton High Moor is approximately 4,900 acres of heather moorland and is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.” And how about this for some detached jargon under ‘Pheasant Shooting‘ for people perhaps concerned they’re not really up to taking out a gun and killing a bird cleanly: “Egton Pheasant Shoot can accommodate guns of all abilities with some high bird drives and some confidence builders but all set within outstanding countryside.” And of course a modern estate must ensure all this slaughtering takes place with the comfort of shooters in mind: “A special atmosphere is created with the ambience of roaring fires, local food and the idyllic river frontage setting.” Modern shooting is removed from reality as far as possible…And in Egton’s case kept away from the other key business of weddings etc, with potential visitors not interested in blood-letting told that “For weddings and accommodation please go to www.egtonevents.co.uk”.
