Billed as a “A Unique and Unforgettable Wedding” venue, the website of Davenport House tells a very different story from that found on the website of “former World Champion and England Shooting Team Captain” David Beardsmore. None of that wedding stuff here: “Located a little over an hour from Birmingham in the beautiful Shropshire countryside, lies one of England’s prettiest shooting estates – Davenport House. This quintessential English estate has a renowned game shoot that has provided excellent shooting for several decades.” It’s news to us that something as purposefully gruesome as shooting estates could ever be ranked in a scale of ‘prettiness’, but the shooting industry is almost pathologically self-absorbed and up its own arse, so perhaps we shouldn’t be too surprised. And amongst all that loveliness – the usual carnage: the shoot “can offer single or double days back to back of 200 to 400+ pheasants” for around £900 + VAT each person. And after all that fun blasting birds out of the air, Davenport House has “an extensive menu” to choose from and accommodation for “Guns plus followers” to use for one or two nights in Davenport House “for a memorable party experience”, which frankly sounds rather like a pitch aimed at swingers. If that seems an odd invitation for a country house that features a wedding business, it’s perhaps not so surprising when it is also chasing the morally suspect types who enjoy a bit of bird killing.
