Owned by Tipperary County Councillor Shane Lee, the Clean Sweep/Shane Lee Chimney Cleaning Mission Statement says helpfully, “I give a very friendly helpful caring service and I give my customers a top class cleaning service. I am very reliable, when I say a time then I will be there and give or take 10 fifteen minutes.” Mr ‘Only Slightly Late’ Lee doesn’t mention that as well as being a ‘top class sweep’, he is (as a March 2021 Irish Mail on Sunday report described him in an article outing his sideline selling litters of pups in breach of animal welfare laws) “a hare coursing and fox hunting enthusiast”. Shane Lee Chimneys has sponsored racing at Thurles greyhound stadium in the past, and in a social media post he wished his brother Pat “the very best of luck in Clonmel [coursing] this weekend”. Ireland remains one of just three countries in Europe that continues to allow legal hare coursing. During the 23/24 coursing season, more than 3,000 Hares were captured from the wild and coursed. Of those, over 100 were hit or tossed by dogs, more than 130 were pinned, and over 120 hares needed veterinary attention, with some dying or being euthanised, as a result of injuries sustained. Something to chat about with Mr Lee while he goes to work on your chimney, perhaps…
