The official Facebook page for the Central Bar describes it somewhat prosaically as a ‘pub’ and is filled with evenings of various betting opportunities, In December 2024, The Central Bar in Lifford hosted a fundraiser for East Donegal hare coursing club and was listed as a sponsor. Later that month, The Central Bar placed a half-page ad in the booklet for the East Donegal hare coursing club meeting. Hare coursing – like fox hunting – remains legal in the Republic of Ireland, with licences for the netting of thousands of hares issued by the Department of Heritage. A 2019 RED C poll found that 77% of people in Ireland want coursing banned, with just 9% disagreeing with a ban. A majority in both rural and urban areas are in favour of the ban.
