“Castle Howard has been home to the Howard family for more than 300 years…The Gardens and Grounds at Castle Howard include lakes, follies, woodland, temples, and statues…landmark nature restoration and rewilding project on our historic Estate…” On and on it goes, accommodation options…walking, cycling, sightseeing, shopping…But this is North Yorkshire, home to more shoots (and hunts) than most regions in the UK – what about shooting? There seems to be nothing al on the Castle Howard website about shooting, perhaps not to upset the potential summer tourist who brings in so much income – but if you look on GunsOnPegs, the website for shooting obsessives, the truth comes tumbling out: “Historically, Castle Howard was a wild bird shoot averaging 80-100 bird days. However, under new management the shoot has recently been transformed into a prolific pheasant shoot offering 200 – 250 bird days.. It really has to be seen (and shot) to be appreciated what a wonderful sporting experiences [sic] the Castle Howard shoot provides.” Castle Howard seems so proud of the huge numbers of birds they kill, why don’t they share with everyone? If just an oversight we’re more than happy to help fix it…
