A historical country pub in Somerset, the Carew Arms “boasts fresh country air, picturesque views and a rich and interesting history”. It also boasts a rich history going back decades of hosting the annual Boxing Day meet of the notorious Quantock Staghounds (QSH) and – despite local concerns – was still welcoming the hunt for a pre-kill beverage in September 2024. The QSH are one of the country’s most violent hunts – hunting deer across the Quantock Hills SSSI, regularly lashing out at members of the North Dorset Hunt Saboteurs, and featuring in multiple posts on Protect the Wild (our Secret Monitor has a particular loathing for this bunch of animal killers). The pub hosted a ‘Cothelstone Point to Point After Party’ in March 2025 with Wivey Kebabs: Cothelstone features fundraising point-to-points for not only the violent Quantock Staghounds, but also the merged Weston & Banwell Harriers and West Somerset Vale, and the Taunton Vale Hunts.
