“Fine wild Scottish game including venison, oven ready pheasant and grouse directly from our farm and estate near Kelso in the Scottish Borders…During the season, we have freshly available beautiful game birds as Pheasant, Grouse, Partridge, Mallard, Woodcock and Teal.” Burnside, according to the supporter who contacted us, runs a shoot on both Burnside and Rutherford farms and appears to have a rather elastic definition of ‘feathered game‘ – including pretty much any bird that they can shoot and sell. Burnside uses the word ‘sustainable’ too – a greenwashing term that routinely now covers such environmentally destructive intensively reared and released non-native birds as Pheasants, and Woodcock, a Red Listed species in sharp decline in the UK. The one word we would agree with to describe these birds is ‘beautiful’ – but that would be when they are still alive, not riddled with lead, plucked, and lying in an oven…As an aside, it would appear that on their website Burnside have used a stock photo of a dead Willow Grouse/Ptarmigan, a bird not found in the UK and the continental form of the endemic Red Grouse, which just seems lazy and even more disrespectful frankly.
