Set in Grizebeck and part of the Lake District National Park, the folks at Ashlack certainly talk a good talk. Their website is laden with wistful phrases like “a space that is blissfully rustic”, “wolfing down a seemingly inexhaustible supply of freshly grown delights” and “witnessing the abundant curiosity and joy of the land”. Oddly they don’t mention the permission given to fell hounds to use their land or the thousands of non-native pheasants and partridges they release for shooting which – given the bucolic nature of the landscape – “will most definitely not be for the faint of heart.” A complaint has been lodged by a supporter with Natural England who ‘manage’ the SSSI on the site concerning the rearing and illegal burning of bracken.
