The Arundell has a long (long) history of associating with shooting, saying on its website that it “continues to be a favourite destination for shooting parties. For both game shooting and stalking our approach is that the camaraderie, hospitality and cuisine are as important an element to your day as the sport itself.” Birders might like to take note of a section under ‘Shooting’ called ‘Driven Woodcock and Snipe’ which says that the Arundell “is well known for its Woodcock and snipe shooting which is organised directly through the hotel”. It notes (with no hint of irony) that days are limited “so as not to stress the quarry and ensure we are enjoying our sport in sympathy with this wonderful natural resource.” ‘Sympathy’ and ‘resource’? The Woodcock is Red listed as a species of conservation concern, and the Common Snipe is Amber listed.
