“Appleby Castle boasts one of the few remaining intact Norman keep. The keep has re-opened as The Norman Centre a museum dedicated to Norman history…The Castle is the perfect location for stylish weddings…The Castle’s luxurious accommodation includes 12 stylish bedrooms and 3 self-contained cottages…”. So, all about the history of a wonderful part of England, eh? Yes, but there is one line on the homepage that punctures the image: “Alternatively stay in one of our self contained holiday cottages. Set in the Inner Bailey, these provide the perfect retreat from a days walking, golf, fishing and shooting.” Why is it now considered utterly normal to tack on killing birds to ‘walking’ and playing golf? And who are these people that need such pampering: “With shoots only minutes drive away, Appleby Castle is the ideal location, offering luxury for those weary legs after a days [sic] shooting.” They are people with money, and that – at the end of the day – is all these venues care about…
